Folk Masks of Asia and the Pacific Rim
In 2007, CSAA Director Sam Carter donated the Dr. Peter Hamon Collection of Folk Masks of Asian and the Pacific Rim to CSAA, which significantly increase the variety and quantity of CSAA's Asian art collection.
The collection consists of over 200 masks from Malaysia, China, Austrailia, Vietnam, Japan, Korean, Nepal, Macixo, USA, Venezuela, Thailand, Singapore, India, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.
The cultural traditions of Asia have created masks for religious rituals, ceremonies of rites of passage, agricultural and religious festivals, for secular performance and folk entertainment. Masks teach old myths and give life to emerging stories. Masking also plays a role in promoting national culture and pride. A technique of temporary transformation, the mask both reveals and conceals. The capacity of masks to command our attention, even when we do not know their full meaning, attests to their artistic integrity and aesthetic power. - Margo Palmer 2008
